Mayors for Peace was formed in 1982 after the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki appeared at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament and called for cities to come together in solidarity for peace and, specifically, the abolition of nuclear weapons.  Today, Mayors for Peace is an integral, leading force in a growing city diplomacy movement seeking to correct the balance of power between municipal and national governments.  In November 2003, when Mayors for Peace launched the Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons, we had 562 members.  Since then the Emergency Campaign has become the 2020 Vision Campaign, and we have grown in size through our Good Faith Challenge and Cities Are Not Targets programs and the recent launch of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol.  As of 1 January 2010, our membership stood at 3,488 cities in 134 countries and regions.
