Job Title: UN Representative, Mayors for Peace Based: Geneva When: Starting as soon as possible, until the end of July 2010 Hours: Part-time, flexible working hours (to fit around study) Volunteer Position (unpaid)
Description
Mayors for Peace was formed in 1982 after the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki appeared at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament and called for cities to come together in solidarity for peace and, specifically, the abolition of nuclear weapons. Today, Mayors for Peace is an integral, leading force in a growing city diplomacy movement seeking to correct the balance of power between municipal and national governments. In November 2003, when Mayors for Peace launched the Emergency Campaign to Ban Nuclear Weapons, we had 562 members. Since then the Emergency Campaign has become the 2020 Vision Campaign, and we have grown in size through our Good Faith Challenge and Cities Are Not Targets programs and the recent launch of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol. We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work as the Mayors for Peace representative in Geneva. Your work will involve liaising and building relations with diplomats and UN officials, lobbying and assistance in organising events and conferences.
Required qualifications/skills: fluent in English, other UN language(s) a plus excellent communication/interpersonal skills confident dealing with diplomats Bachelor degree or higher excellent time management skills pro-active, ability to work on own initiative strong organisational skills interest/experience in issues surrounding nuclear disarmament
