Purpose of position:
Background :
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian organisation with 186 member National Societies. Present all over the world - not just physically in towns, villages and neighbourhoods, but also in the minds and hearts of people - we represent an important "public good".
With the arrival in the Secretariat of a new senior management team in April 2009 it became necessary to review and adjust the Secretariat structure in Geneva. This review was driven by anticipating what the Federation's evolving Strategy 2020 would mean for the Secretariat as well as the Secretary General's Moving Forward agenda. This modified job description reflects the outcome of this review and the desired adjustments and focus for the Head of the Health and Social Services Department.
Purpose :
To further develop Federation competency and capacity in the fight against HIV/AIDS through working with colleagues in other departments and in the field.
Description of Duties:
Facilitate and support the Secretariat-wide effort to scale up interventions against HIV/AIDS.
Develop policy, guidelines, tools and key messages related to interventions and advocacy that aim at preventing, controlling HIV/AIDS and provide care and support for PLHIV.
Provide and mobilize technical advice, programme organizational direction, tools and quality control related to comprehensive HIV/AIDS interventions
Provide technical support and organizational directions for technical staff at zone and regional offices to enable them render support to National Societies to implement support and care activities in support of people living with HIV/AIDS and their families and expand prevention efforts in the communities at large.
Guide and support Federation efforts to make the RC a better home for people living with HIV/AIDS and, in particular, to involve PLWHA in Federation work.
Guide and support the integration of HIV/AIDS into other policies and programmes.
Develop close professional contact and partnerships with relevant specialists from ICRC and other international organizations.
Represent the Federation at international meetings related to HIV and AIDS and advocate agreed Federation positions.
Facilitate knowledge and experience sharing among technical staff within regional delegations and National Societies.
Provide in due time programme updates both for internal and external use and communication (reports, regular FedNet and Website updates, briefing, etc.)
Duties applicable to all staff:
•Actively work towards the achievement of the Secretariat's goals.

•Perform any other work related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the line manager.
Required Qualifications
Education:
University degree in health related sciences.
Post graduate training in public health / epidemiology will be an asset.
Experience:
At least 8 years relevant working experience in developing countries in area of public health focusing on communicable diseases including HIV and 2 years working experience with an international organization.
Skills:
Capable of providing leadership and co-ordination.
Analytical skills.
Able to work under stressful conditions and meet tight deadlines.
Computer literacy.
Good trainer would be an asset.
Knowledge of RC/RC Movement would be an asset.
Languages:
Fluent written and spoken English.
Good working knowledge of another Federation official language would be an asset.
