Senior Program Officer, Geneva Office

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) works locally and globally at the intersection of policy and practice to ensure fair and sustainable food, farm and trade systems. IATP is a U.S.-based organization governed by an international board of directors. Headquartered in Minneapolis, IATP also has offices in Washington, Geneva, and Beijing.
DESCRIPTION
IATP seeks a full-time senior program officer to serve as its representative in Geneva, working on climate change, food security and economic policy. Work will be focused on the international institutions operating in Geneva and elsewhere in Europe, in collaboration with like-minded NGOs and social movements. The senior program officer will advocate for rights-based approaches to climate change, food security and trade policy in support of IATP goals. This position reports to IATP’s International Program Director.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience relating to policy makers and negotiators on sustainable agriculture, climate and economic policy, the ability to forge coalitions across sectors and cultures, and very strong writing and communication skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Develop advocacy on fair multilateral rules and governance for climate, food security and trade issues in accordance with IATP principles and research
· Contribute to IATP’s analysis and written research on multilateral climate, food security and economic policy
· Represent IATP with NGOs, government officials, intergovernmental agencies and the press in Geneva
· Strengthen civil society advocacy on agriculture, climate and economic policy by providing information, analysis, ideas and space for action
· Develop constructive relationships with climate change, food security and trade negotiators in Geneva and elsewhere in Europe in support of fair and sustainable food and agriculture
· Write articles and prepare and give public speeches and presentations
· Travel within Europe, to the United States and other countries as needed
· Work in close collaboration with IATP’s Trade and Global Governance team including through regular team conference calls and periodic visits to headquarters in Minneapolis
· Manage the Geneva office, including budgeting, contributing to fundraising, grant writing and reports to funders, with support from IATP’s Development team
· Plan and host events
· Supervise occasional interns
QUALIFICATIONS
· Experience working in international public policy, with preference for candidates with demonstrable understanding of the nexus between sustainable agriculture, climate change and trade policy
· Graduate degree in international development, sustainable agriculture, environment, human rights or other relevant field.
· Support for IATP perspectives and advocacy on these issue areas
· Experience in working with different types of civil society organizations in an international context
· Comfortable working with government officials in an international context
· Excellent communication, writing and computer skills
· Ability to learn new skills, work independently and to collaborate with a team
· Excellent English language communication skills (written and oral), and at least one other language (Spanish and/or French preferred).
Compensation for this position is based on qualifications and experience.
