WorkLOAD 50% Duration5 months, from early September 2010 LocationGeneva, Switzerland Background: The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) works toward the global elimination of anti-personnel mines and minimising the negative humanitarian impact from other landmines and explosive remnants of war. The Centre conducts research, provides operational support to Governments and mine action organisations, and also conducts research studies. The Centre also supports the implementation of relevant instruments of humanitarian law.
This post is within the small Communications team, providing support to all departments of the GICHD. The team has responsibility for all aspects of publications production, internal and external communications and liaises closely with operational project managers to achieve individual projects. The work is varied and interesting and has some scope for further development. Key Responsibilities:
· editing draft publication texts for clarity, consistency, accuracy and appropriate language levels for non-mother tongue English speakers. Specific examples of these texts include main GICHD publications, ISU publications, webpages, material from the Director’s office, and press releases. · undertaking the publications production process including planning, procuring estimates, liaising with project managers and external suppliers, editing text, proofreading layout and signing off documents to the printers. Other responsibilities include:
· preparation and regular update of a text and language guide for use by colleagues or consultants (GICHD Writing Guidelines) · providing planning and other support to the Head of Communications, where required · maintaining and expanding communication management tools (eg freelance contributoprs matrix) · researching communications-related issues Qualifications, Skills & ExperienceUniversity degree in English language or media-related studies English mother tongue; French skills and other languages would be an asset Ability to edit in British English Familiarity with the production process of publications Prior work experience of 2-3 years in similar positions Technical editing experience is preferred Experience in public relations or media would be a benefit Self-sufficient in Microsoft standard softwares Ability to function and multi-task in a fast-paced environment Holder of valid work permit or Swiss national Additional ConsiderationsThe position may require working irregular hours. No previous knowledge of the mine action sector is necessary, although a willingness to learn fast about the sector and the GICHD’s role in it will be vital.
